Planting Garlic | Germinating Seeds

I am always happy when I hear from growers and gardeners who are brewing and feeding their garden and indoor plant soil Authentic Haven Brand Natural Brew. Where I really find pleasure is sharing the true benefits that my 100% natural Soil nutrients bring to the garden.

Carolyn Binder, organic gardener and published garden writer is farming her urban organic garden and documenting it through her blog site at Cowlick Cottage Farms

Carolyn's most recent share is the planting of her winter Christmas garlic. Chatting on twitter with Carolyn (@cowlickcottage) she mentioned that she was late in getting her garlic seeds planted. I suggested to her to brew a batch of Authentic Haven Brand Natural Brew and soak her garlic seed for 24 hours prior to planting.

Carolyn's garlic sprouting on day 4

Carolyn, states in her blog postI am most excited about my crop of Christmas garlic. It was planted at least a month late, but it is looking fantastic. This is third-generation garlic from our little Cowlick Cottage Farm , grown entirely organically. Prior to planting, I soaked it in Moo Poo Tea overnight, and that gave it the energy to burst with life once planted in our rich soil. For more about the benefits of feeding your garden organically, visit my friend and heritage rancher, Annie Haven.

If you want to get your garden started right this season hydrate your starts, sets, and seeds in Authentic Haven Brand Natural Brew   prior to planting like Carolyn has done.

Soaking information:
Size:                           Time:
Small seeds                1 to 4 hours
Medium seeds           4  to 6 hours
Large seeds               6  to 8 hours

All bulb type seed and bulbs can soak for 24 hours prior to planting.

Use the manure tea that you soaked your seeds in to moisten the soil prior to planting. Continue to brew and feed Authentic Haven Brand Natural Brew throughout the growing season for optimal plant growth, it will increase your bloom and vegetable yield naturally.

Fall Harvest Fruits & Exotics

by Carolyn Binder:  This weekend was a big one for farmers and gardeners in north Florida and South Georgia.  The New Leaf Market Farm Tour attracts an ever-growing crowd to its 32 participating farms, backyard gardens and dairies.  We often spend the entire weekend touring farms right near our home in Monticello. But this year, we were a little behind in our own planting and autumn chores. So we decided to make a morning visit to Just Fruits and Exotics, a teaching orchard and nursery in Crawfordville, Florida.  If you’re interested in learning how to grow fruit trees, it’s the place to go. They sell their stock via mail order from their website, www.justfruitsandexotics.com. The site is jam-packed with some of the best growing information I’ve found for almost every type of edible, so drop in and check it out. The nursery carries an amazing array of fruit, along with herbs and vegetables, and a selection of ornamentals for your garden. read more... Autumn Fall Fruits and Exotics

Guest Post by Annie Haven (@greensoil )

Toiling in the Soil and growing sustainably is not new to me, Social Media on the other hand! hmmm
Well, you have to roll back a couple of years ago when I logged on to twitter and slowly began to meet gardeners. @GetintheGarden, @BetweentheLimes, @SusanLMorrison @SweetRebecca @bwisegardens, @gardenofwords @Suburban_Farmer, @BG_garden and those Bad Weed Band Boys of gardening @GardenWiseGuy @GypsyFarmer and @TeeRiddle. All of them posting beautiful garden blogs sharing the latest blooms and recipes they had growing on. Me, I’m just an Independent Woman Rancher with a 100% natural Soil nutrient garden product line, I harvest from my grass fed livestock, would I fit in? Would they listen to what I knew my Moo Poo Teas could do for the garden Soil (thank you @UniquebyDesign_ for the nick name Moo Poo Tea) as you can see it has stuck.

Well, I’m honored and humbled to say yes, each of these fabulous gardeners made me feel right at home in the garden with them. Chance tweetings on Thursday nights led to #gardenchat started by @GetintheGarden to give us all a place and a time to meet and share what we had growing on. From those early days to now #gardenchat under the direction of my garden gal pal Brenda Haas of BGgarden.com #gardenchat has blossomed into the Virtual Garden where Garden Bloogers, Garden Designers, Garden Show Hosts, Garden Product Companies, Growers and the everyday gardener can come share what they have growing on.

Meeting folks in the Virtual Garden of #gardenchat grows daily @agardendiary @Susanhammon

Winner Garden of the Month | RedneckRosarian

An invitation from our garden to yours…
Every month, we will feature a garden from one of our subscribers. Send us your pictures, along with a brief description of yourself, your garden and the particular plants or areas that you would like to highlight to information@costafarms.com.

The June 2011 Garden of the Month belongs to Chris from Helena, Alabama (Zone 7b). Chris has been growing roses for years, and about4 years ago, joined a local Rose Society to learn a “more excellent” way to cultivate our nation’s “National Floral Emblem”.
Folks ask Chris all the time why he grows roses and his answer is that growing is ‘just the natural progression of things’. Also know as the RedneckRosarian, this southern gentleman comes from a family that finds its roots firmly planted in the Deep South and all its awesome traditions. During civil war times, women gathered at cemeteries to decorate the graves of “our glorious dead” with blankets of spring roses. They wept and celebrated the lives of those who so bravely “fought the good fight”. Even today families gather for “Decoration Day” to decorate the graves and celebrate and remember.
Roses permeate so many facets of our lives, and Chris embodies that sentiment. When you visit his website at RedneckRosarian you will see his dedication to perpetuating knowledge about all types of roses and particularly the planting and care of rose gardens. If you look around his home, you will find yourself surrounded roses. They appear on dishes, photographs, upholstery, clothes, shoes, wallpaper and paintings. Chris valiantly attempts to do his part to expand the general interest and knowledge of the beautiful gift we have in the rose and to date, he has 73 roses under cultivation, representing over 60 varieties.

Manure Tea-Plant Nutrition

Manure/Manure Tea: Cow or Horse manure has for centuries been an excellent source of natural plant nutrition. Cow and Horse manure added to your garden soil works to break down the soil. What does this? "Live Microorganisms" like little pack-men they work away at the soil breaking it down so that your plants root system can more readily absorb needed nutrients from within the soil.

When you add Cow or Horse manure to the soil you need to allow time for this process to work.

However; when you brew and use Cow or Horse manure as a "tea" it goes to work immediately, like liquid vitamins.

Authentic Haven Brand premium soil conditioner manure teas are "pure manure" harvested by hand and Eco hand packaged in tea bag form, from Haven raised livestock only. The Haven family raise their livestock free of antibiotics, growth hormones and pesticides and have since 1924. Authentic Haven Brand Eco friendly packaging makes it easy for you to brew and easy for you to use, your plants will love you for it.

Authentic Haven Brand
has taken the hassle out of brewing manure as a tea. Gone are the days of searching for a manure source or taking time out of your gardening day to go get it. You can now grow Green by simply going to http://www.AuthenticHavenBrand.com and placing your order through our secure web site.

We are here for the Green minded garden grower, if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail annie@ahavenbrand.com we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Authentic Haven Brand is a family owned business and we are here for our customers guaranteed.

Manure Tea not Eral Gray

Authentic Haven Brand in San Juan Capistrano is selling manure teabags. But don’t store them next to the Lipton box.
Yeah, you can steep them in a large water jar, but don’t leave the resulting brew on the porch with the lunch sandwiches and cookies, says owner Annie Haven.
Manure tea tastes like you-know-what to humans, but it’s nectar to your plants and roses, she says.
The manure itself may be too strong but the liquid derived from steeping “is like all natural, liquid vitamins.”
She deliberately makes Haven teabags 3-by-5 inches, larger than varieties for human tea, but a competitor, no longer in business, made spoon-sized bags that could be easily mistaken for the human variety, Haven says.
Haven manure teabags are sold online here, 3 for $12.95, 9 for $21.95. They’re also carried at Regalo, San Juan Capistrano; Sherman Library and Gardens, Corona Del Mar; Delaney’s Artisan market, Temecula; La Chatue, Murrieta; and DuPonts Winterthru Library and Gardens in Delaware.
There are other brands of manure tea, Haven says. Some sell worm casting tea, chicken manure tea. Some sell it in large bags, but pre-brewed tea doesn’t last because it loses nutrients, she insists.

“My grandmother brewed manure tea,” says Haven, who has lived all her life on Southern California cattle ranches and tomato farms. “I’m growing my green business in this brown economy.” says Annie Haven
Authentic Haven Brand teas come from cattle that are fed grass and no chemicals and no nutrients are added to the manure. “People ask what the urine content is, but these aren’t dairy cows, so this doesn’t have urine in it,” Haven says.
The Havens have been ranchers in the United States since 1873 and in what is now Orange County/North San Diego County as far back as 1910, Annie Haven says. At one point Haven Seed Company was a large producer of tomato seeds.

Most of her family are still in ranching and related industries farther north. Annie Haven splits her time between San Juan Capistrano and Murietta ranches.
She still raises cattle, selling off enough to make a living and breeding replacements. But prolonged periods of below-average rain had left her with too few head to live on, so she started commercializing what she calls the natural soil conditioner that’s a part of cattle ranching.
“American farmers and ranchers as far back as I can remember have never had just one business,” Haven says. “You cutting dead trees and low limbs and selling it for firewood, recycle scrap to sell.
The teabags are a value-added by-product of my livestock business.”
Haven has 3,000 followers on Twitter (@greensoil) and is hoping to win Intuit’s Love a Local Business contest.
